Sometimes the best way to understand what is possible is to see a real transformation. This Sherman Oaks project is one of our favorites — a tired, overgrown backyard that became a stunning outdoor living space in just 8 weeks.
The Challenge
The homeowners had a 1,100 sq ft backyard that was mostly dead grass, cracked concrete, and an aging wooden fence. They wanted a space where they could entertain, cook outdoors, and relax with their family — without feeling like they were staring at their neighbors.
The Design
We designed a multi-zone layout: a dining area with a 12-foot aluminum pergola, an L-shaped outdoor kitchen with built-in grill, side burner, and mini fridge, a conversation area with a custom gas fire pit, and a lawn area with premium artificial turf for the kids. The entire space was framed with drought-tolerant landscaping and strategic privacy hedges.
Materials Selected
We used 24×24 porcelain pavers in a warm sand tone for the main patio area, a charcoal-toned block for the kitchen island with granite countertops, and powder-coated aluminum for the pergola structure. The fire pit was built with matching block and topped with fire glass in an amber tone that complements the overall palette.
The Build
Week 1-2: Demolition of existing concrete and old landscaping, grading and compaction. Week 3-4: Utility rough-in (gas, electrical, water), base preparation for pavers. Week 5-6: Paver installation, kitchen island construction, pergola installation. Week 7-8: Finish electrical, plumbing connections, landscaping, lighting, and final details.
The Result
The homeowners went from never using their backyard to spending every evening outside. They hosted their first dinner party two days after we finished — for 20 guests. The space feels like a boutique hotel courtyard, but it is their own private retreat.
Total investment: $95,000. Time from contract to completion: 8 weeks. Homeowner satisfaction: off the charts.
